Sonic has had an interesting year, with having one of its best games releases and one of the most mediocre ones to date. So how does 2017 truely end for the blue blur? Well… It ends with Sonic Runners Adventure. The sequel of 2015’s Sonic Runners. This time Sonic Team isn’t leading development of this title, but the infamous mobile developer GameLoft are. How does this game hold up to the original, let's find out!

The Story

Oh boy… This is going to be a short section of the review. There really isn’t much story in Sonic Runners Adventure, however you don’t really buy this game to listen to the “cinematic” story. There is a story there but it really isn’t the main vocal part of the game. Overall it is just generally a pile of nothingness. But at least they did try to put some form of narrative in here.

The Gameplay

The gameplay is taken directly from the original Sonic Runners and not much has really changed about it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sonic Runners Adventure is an endless runner where all you have to do is tap the screen to dodge oncoming obstacles. Its simple but it works extremely well, this game is great for when your just really, really bored and want an easy game to get into.

Generally however, sequels are supposed to build on the originals gameplay and expand and improve it, Sonic Runners Adventure does NONE of these things. In fact it is a step backwards from Sonic Teams version of the game. In the original you used to have events which would spice up the game and you could unlock characters and companions to use in the game. However this game has hardly any companions or characters when compared to the original.

Now sure, the content which is in the game may be different due to the fact that this game is not free to play, you actually have pay a small fee to download this game, meaning that there are no microtransactions in this game. And you know what? That's great, it really is however I feel like Sonic Runners Adventure would benefit if it followed the same business model that the original did. Simply down to the fact that it would be more challenging to get characters and the possibility of more events etc.

Overall the game is easy to pick up and play but doesn’t really do much that the original didn’t already do better. Hopefully they continue to work on the game and expand the gameplay, if they do that then I will rereview the game.

The Visuals

The visuals in this game are… Okay. You can definitely tell that this game wasn’t made by Sonic Team. The artstyle from the original is completely gone and replaced with a new generic style which really isn’t as interesting as it could be. The character models look accurate but there just isn’t any soul in them compared to the previous game which really gave an interesting shade to the models which enhanced the look and feel of the game. In this case however the graphics are just boring which is a shame.

Verdict

Overall Sonic Runners Adventure is a really basic Sonic game. It doesn’t really do much to move the “Runners” series forward (ironically). It's certainly an okay game but after a couple hours there really isn’t much else to do in the game. Hopefully in the near future the game gets expansions and continues to evolve.
