I’ve been playing Call of Duty for a very long time. It all started for me back in MW1, everyday after school I would go home to try and rank myself up in the multiplayer so that those smug arseholes i went to school with would shut up about them being a higher rank than me. The competitiveness of it was what made me fall in love with the series despite the criticism that it used to get even back in the old days. As we went into the “future” era of COD, my love of the series faded and faded away. Has COD WW2 brought back my love for the series? Let's find out!
Gameplay
Now for the gameplay in Call of Duty WW2… It's basically the exact same thing that it always has been, and that really isn’t a bad thing considering what the gameplay has been like in the previous few COD games. This game goes back to the bare basics of Call of Duty, no more exo suits, no more sliding and no more poo futuristic weapons. This is old school COD as you know and love but with a few modern tweaks here and there.

In my opinion this is the best that COD has ever felt. The controls are tight and responsive, moving about feels great and now with the addition of diving instead of sliding, it makes you feel more like a human rather than a super sonic robot mess. The guns all feel and sound great too, going back to more old school weapons from WW2 really makes everything feel more believable and real.
Overall the gameplay is exactly what I want from a COD game, its quick and responsive with none of the future tech being involved this time around makes the gameplay in this COD a pleasant experience.

Visuals
The visuals are pretty great in this game. Typically COD games don’t usually shine in the graphics department due to the engines they use and they keep graphics to a minimum to ensure smooth gameplay and 60FPS. COD WW2 holds up pretty well especially in the games story mode, but due to the gritty and dark theme of the game, the graphics really end up suiting the style of the game. The in game cinematics are somewhat of a marvel aswell. Overall the visuals in this game are some of the best that we’ve ever seen in COD. The games graphical style really makes it shine.

The Single Player
Now, most of you are not here to hear my opinions on the story mode of this game but i’ll talk you about anyways. The story in this game is definitely one of the best that COD has ever done. It just all feels so cinematic and because this is set in World War 2 you really feel for the characters that you meet in the story because it is so much more real when compared to the futuristic games.
The gameplay is also really different, it is very similar to that of Call of Duty 1 in the fact that your health doesn’t regenerate in the story mode. You have to collect health pickups in order for you to get your health back, many people didn’t like but I think it is an excellent design choice as it really adds a good sense of challenge to the game unlike other COD’s where you could just blaze through a level. Overall the single player is really well made and definitely worth a go once your bored of the multiplayer.

Multiplayer
Now this is where we get into the nitty gritty of the game, the multiplayer. This is where the game both shines and shows its true colours at times… The multiplayer is full to the brim with stuff to do and unlock. I’m still playing now after getting the game two months ago, this game keeps you interested way more than most of the previous COD’s.
So let's talk about some of the gamemodes in this game. We have the standard Team Deathmatch, Free for All and Kill Confirmed etc. All of these classic modes all work well in the game and are just what you expect them to be, killing other players still feels as amazing as it did all those years ago. An all new gamemode has been added into the mix though and that is the War mode. This mode is one of those… You either love it or hate it and I LOVE IT! It is such a different type of mode for a game like COD, the games can last forever and you can get so much XP from it as well. You have to follow certain objectives so that your team can win, this can mean you have to fight back the opposing team by building a bridge or blocking their tanks etc. It really is an excellent gamemode which is worth a try.

Classes have also been changed in this game, you have divisions now which you unlock as you progress your level in the game. These divisions really do make the classes system feel more diverse and adds onto the overall experience. Another cool addition is the Hub which you can access from the main menu, here you can interact with other players, open crates and accept new missions for you too complete which in a gamemode, it certainly is a unique addition but the only issue is that it feels waaaay to much like Destiny…
The multiplayer maps are great as well, they’re much smaller this time around so you won’t be stuck walking around for hours looking for someone to shoot, some maps are mediocre however but a large majority of them are pretty good.

Now before I close off this segment of the review, I want to discuss the things that I don’t like about the multiplayer. Number one… SUPPLY DROPS! Now admittedly these are not as bad as previous games but I still don’t like the fact that they are here. They are not all bad, it does feel good to get rare items from these creates, i just don’t like the concept of them and what they stand for. Number two, this still has the classic COD problem where you shoot at a player and the hits don’t register. Some games you have really bad luck and it just feels like the game is cheating you (And yes, it could also be down to the fact that i’m a shi*ty player but no seriously it's Activisions fault… ).
Overall the multiplayer is definitely the strongest aspect of the game, it can keep you entertained for hours on end and is even better when your playing with other people. If you want a COD game with excellent MP, make sure that you don’t miss this one! Now before we move on, I will not be discussing Zombies in this review, the zombies part of the game will be reviewed in a seperate blog.
Verdict
Call of Duty WW2 is one of the best COD games in years! I would go to say I haven’t played a COD game this much since the days of MW3. The multiplayer along keeps me coming back for more every time. The amount of effect actually put into this title really shows and the fact it's from Sledgehammer Games who made the terrible Advanced Warfare, it really surprised me. The game does have a few problems here and there but it is not enough to take away from the whole experience. More of this in the future please Activision.
