Even thought Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn't been officially announced by Rockstar we have no doubt that it is in development. We personally feel that there will not be an official announcement until Red Dead Redemption 2 has fianlly released on October 26, 2018, we are going to wait as we should not expect this game to come until 2020 or beyond. Even though it may sound mad to be talking and speculating about this game this early on, there are some solid facts that we can go on. This article will be updated everytime we get some official news regarding GTA 6.

What has Rockstar Actually Said About GTA 6?

Back in 2013, the former President of Rockstar North started rumors by saying in an interview with Develop Magazine:

“We don’t know what GTA 6 will be, but we’ve got some ideas,” said Benzies in the interview. “We’ve got about 45 years’ worth of ideas we want to do. We’ll pick the right ones. It comes from the idea first. Where it is going to be set is the first question. That then defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in."

Leslie Benzies, Former President of Rockstar North

As you see here, Benzies doesn't really give much away about the next major GTA title but it does give us some idea as to what the thought process behind the series currently is.

When will the GTA 6 release date be?

In our god honest opinion, GTA 6 will not be here for MANY years yet. We are still waiting for Rockstar to release Red Dead Redemption 2... It is likely that GTA 6 will be confirmed around very late 2018 / early 2019 mainly down to the fact that Rockstar need to give RDR2 some breathing room before announcing the next GTA.

Rockstar however could suprise us by releasing the game much earlier than expected instead of leaving two years after an initial announcement. This may be unlikely due to the fact that a longer wait between announcement and release means more preorders etc. But releasing the game like this may draw some benefits for Rockstar.

We feel that the new GTA won't release on current generation hardware and will instead go for the next generation of gaming. Technically the wait between GTA 5 and 6 is longer than any console generation so this is a reasonable prediction to make.

Where will GTA 6 be set? GTA World?

There are many rumors as to where the next GTA will be set. But before we dive into those, lets discuss locations that we know off:

  • Liberty City - GTA 3,4

  • Vice City - GTA Vice City

  • San Andreas / Los Santos - GTA: San Andreas, GTA 5

If we are going off history here, it is safe to assume that GTA 6 will return to either Libery City or Vice City. However it could be a bold direction for Rockstar if they decided to introduce new locations into the series for the first time. We feel that they will introduce more areas down to the fact that GTA Online has set new expectations in terms of the world that you work in. Benzies had stated back in 2013 that the ambition for GTA Online was “To grow this world until it’s the world. We’re just going to add on new things to it, new places all the time”.

Five years later and it seems that the ambition for this concept was lost or dropped by Rockstar as we have had no new locations added to the game, there were once rumors that Liberty City was coming to GTA Online but that never came to be true. We've had recent updates such as the Doomsday Heist which have added new interiors etc. But no new countries or states. Leslie Banzies had left Rockstar in 2016 so it is possible that his departure also meant that these ideas went out the window.

However something said since 2013 by Leslie has still remained true: “The only limitation is the size of the disc and how much memory we’ve got. We could, if we wanted, simulate the entire world, different countries, whatever”. Rockstar might revisit familiar locations first, he claimed: “Whether we do that or not… but we’ve got a bunch of old stuff that we’re toying with using”. With this statement alone it looks like likely that they will still revisit older locations before they move onto something bold and new.

GTA 6 Credible Rumors

A GTA Set Across The Whole Of The USA

There are fan theories that GTA 6 will be have a giant map which features all 52 of the North American states rather than just a singular city. You can read more at gta6grandtheftauto.com about this rumor .

Is this possible? This definetly sounds like something that could happen as we know that Rockstar like to increase the scale of their games with each new release. But this is a very next generation idea and will take alot of development time and power to pull off.

Futuristic GTA

There was actually a rumor that the new GTA will be set in a more futuristic setting with one of the games mechanics involving time travel, according to a article by Christian Today, who doesn't name its source so this could all just be hot air.

Is this possible? In my own mind this seems very unlikely. The GTA series has always been grounded and has been set in more realistic time eras. Of course GTA recently has added futuristic elements to GTA Online as of late but it doesn't seem like the type of risk that Rockstar want to take for the next major entry.

GTA London 2.0

Rumors of a London setting for GTA 6 actually came from Rockstar themselves back in an interview with Dan Houser back in September 2013 with an interview with Polygon:

“At the moment, it feels like GTA’s DNA is contemporary-ish, American-ish, English-speaking-ish, because that’s what it has been… but that doesn’t necessarily limit it to those, that’s just what we’ve done so far.”

This gave the fanbase fuel to speculate that GTA may be looking elsewhere for inspiration, but within the same month Houser also said that GTA won't be coming back to London in an interview with The Guardian:

"I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then," said Houser. "These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don't know if it would be a GTA game. I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them – I just don't think it would be a GTA necessarily."

Is it possible? We definetly would not rule it out all together, mainly because London has actually been visited before in the GTA universe with GTA London. However personally I feel like it would be a wrong move for Rockstar as GTA has many US fans and the fact that London even with its many issues in this present day is just boring when compared to other areas which they could use.

GTA Tokyo?

According to a source from TechRader back in March 2016, Rockstar had actually visited Tokyo for research and references for a title called GTA: Tokyo serveral years ago. However it was said that the idea for this game was dropped but before that the studio had met up with and spoke to some of the locals, also taking many different pictures to get good feel of the city before starting development on this game.

This source has stated that Rockstar was very serious about a GTA game with a japenese setting as they had even trademarked GTA: Tokyo, GTA: Bogota and GTA: Sin City back in 2003. This of course was around the time of GTA 3 and Vice City, accordingly the road systems was seen as a major problem which is why the game was eventually dropped.

Is it possible? Certainly, however if GTA moved away from the US it would be a very big deal, many staples that Rockstar had set up would have to be revised such as brands, car manufacturers etc. But I can't lie, it would be interesting.

Female Lead Character For GTA 6?

Due to certain politcal momentum, it seems highly likely that one of the main playable characters in GTA 6 will of course be a female. When asked in 2013, Rockstar co-founder and GTA lead Dan Houser had told The Guardian that in GTA 5's case, they hadn't thought of the idea of a female protagonist at this time:

“That’s not to say that we couldn’t or we wouldn’t. This character set is just what came to us: it wasn’t, ‘we’ve got X and Y so we need Z’. We weren’t trying to do it off a checklist – I don’t think that will ever give you something that’s believable or engaging.”

“In the future, could we do a game with a female lead? Of course. We just haven’t found the right game for it yet, but it’s one of the things that we always think about. It didn’t feel natural for this game but definitely for the right game in the future - with the right themes, it could be fantastic. But for GTA 5, this was the organic thing that came up, these were the characters that would display the themes we wanted to think about.”

Is it possible? Yes definetly. Rockstar are not a stranger to controversy and not adding a female lead in the new GTA will only give them negative attention rather than postive due to the changing ways for women in the world right now. It would be a mistake for Rockstar not to do this, it would certainly shake up the GTA formula in new ways.

Multiple Protagonists... Cops And Robbers Style

Another GTA 6 fan theory also suggests that multiple playable characters will be returning, but not in the same way as before. This time it would be a cops vs robbers style of scenario. With one of the characters being a cop and the other character is a criminal. This theory may have orginated from Reddit or from those who roleplay as cops in GTA Online, this would be a really interesting take on the GTA 5 formula and would be an interesting story to tell.

Is it possible? I don't see why not, it would be an interesting evolution from the GTA 5 formula and would offer some unique storytelling to be told.

GTA 6 VR?

According to rumors floating round the internet, GTA 5 could be a VR only game, similar to that off Resident Evil 7.

Is it possible? VR in a sense really hasn't done as well as people in the industry had hoped, it is overpriced and is just not accessible for most gamers. Too me it would be too big of a financial gamble to do this with a main GTA title. Even though LA Noire did it recently with "The VR Cases", that worked well due to it being seperate from the whole game. I'd be up for Rockstar doing a seperate GTA using VR but it just seems highly unlikely that they will do this for GTA 6.

So... How Do We Think GTA 6 Will Turn Out?

After making sense of all the credible evidence into one single prediction. GTA 6 will be coming to next generation hardware (e.g. PS5, Xbox One2) in 2020 or beyond. Set across different locations with the multiple character mechanic from GTA 5 returning in this title with at least one female lead. GTA Online will be bought over to new hardware using GTA 6 and will lead the already existing audience to whole new generation of Online carnage. A possibilty could be that GTA Online will be a story / online hybrid instead of just an Online Playground.

GTA Online will definetly remain a focus as we can't deny that it has been successful since its launch in 2013. Take Two have even said that GTA Online is still the key revenue driver even though GTA 5 as a whole has shipped 90 Million units.

In terms of the story of GTA 6, we predict that it will follow the trends of today just like GTA 5 did. They will elborate on such things such as "Fake News" and Equality etc.

Visually we think this game will look incredible, GTA 5 even to this day still looks amazing on its own considering it was meant for PS3 and Xbox 360 originally. GTA 6 may continue to evolve NPC AI and its world building.
