Pac-Man is a true legend in gaming, with more games that you can shake a stick at. In this modern day era people really don’t get along with the original Pac-Man, its challenging difficulty means that it isn’t as accessible to more casual audiences… That is where this game changes everything. Welcome to our Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 review!

Gameplay

The gameplay in Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 is exactly what you’d expect from a Pac-Man game, except this 1000% faster and more action packed. It is very similar to its predecessor Pac-Man CE1 but this game improves on every aspect of that game. You have two unique types of game modes in this game, you have the score attack mode and the adventure mode. Both of which offer a new and unique take on the Pac-Man formula.

There is also a very handy tutorial mode which acts as its own mode when you first start out the game.

The gameplay itself is mainly the same as the original pac-man but to put it in simple terms, it is easier to play but still hard to master. The slight differences here are as follows, you no longer die from hitting a ghost anymore, instead you bump into them, if you keep hitting the same ghost then they will enter a rage mode and will then kill you they come into contact with you.

Eating power pellets has changed also, in some modes you have to kill a long train of ghosts using the pellet in order to move onto the next part of a map and to rack up the high scores. The gameplay is still simply Pac-Man just with added spice and it really, really works.

Score Attack

Now let's talk about the Score Mode. This mode is exactly as it sounds, the aim of this mode is too get the highest score possible. This is assisted by the fact that each score mode has a rank you need to get, with the S Rank being the highest rank you can get. Getting that S Rank is a challenge in itself, even while writing this review I have yet to get that annoying S Rank, it is a genuine challenge which you don’t get in most games today. Now there isn’t just one level to play in this mode, there are many different levels on three different difficulties, each level has its own rank so if you want to S Rank these… Then good luck.

The Score Attack Mode is definitely the highlight of this game, with hours and hours of content for players both new to Pac-Man and veterans alike. The sheer challenge of this mode keeps you coming back for more, everytime you replay a level you always feel like your better at that particular map. This is certainly a level of progression which is unheard of in modern day games and I really appreciate it.

Adventure Mode

Adventure Mode is a very unique kind of mode for a Pac-Man game. Don’t let the name fool you, this is still the same kind of gameplay which you are going to find in Score Attack mode expect every level has different objectives to complete etc. Each level has 3 stars which you can collect, you get more stars when you raise the difficulty of the level. You need a certain amount of stars so that you can defeat the world boss and move onto the next part of Adventure Mode. The bosses are very much the same as the normal levels except you get a special cutscene at the end once you complete the level.

Overall Adventure Mode is good but it doesn’t really switch things up enough to make its existence justified. This is more like a Mission Mode if anything, it doesn’t hold my attention like the Score Attack mode did, its not bad, its just the weakest addition to the game.

Visuals

The visuals in this game are great, everything just looks crystal clear. There are many different graphical styles that you can choose when starting a Score Attack game or Adventure game. You can choose the classic pixel style, go Pac-Man World style in 3D and even more variations. Overall the game looks appealing, it stands out from other retro throwbacks which are on the market.

Verdict

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 is an outstanding game which can be addictive very quickly if you let it. The amount of content in this game is more than most AAA games. The Score Attack mode alone can keep you busy for a long time. The game is very easy to just pick up and play for new and old players which is amazing considering how difficult the original Pac-Man was.

Overall definitely pick this game up if its cheap, the only let down to the game is the Adventure Mode which had potential to be so much more, but the Score Attack makes up for it.

8/10 - Brilliant

Pros:

Score Attack

Hours of Content

Amazing Visuals

Cons:
